Iyengar Yoga Appreciation Day… in Sooke BC

Sooke BC

Laurie Ankenman of Sooke BC tells us about how her community marked this day –

On Saturday April 13 2024, a group of 12 students arrived at Moment Yoga Studio in Sooke BC to participate in the cross-Canada Iyengar Yoga Appreciation Day.

We were delighted to have Ann Kilbertus from the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria (IYCV) join us, as well as local teachers Laurie Ankenman and Vincent Cummings (apprentice) guiding us in a general practice. A highlight in the practice was exploring the slant board to expand our awareness in basic asanas. It connected us all to one of the hallmarks of Iyengar yoga – a beginner’s mind, i.e., a mind open to new learning. Ann encouraged students to experiment in different ways and to notice the effects the prop created in their body and mind.

Following the practice, we created a circle to share conversation, coffee, tea, nuts and fruit while Ann shared poignant stories of her trips to India, including a few notable stories of personal interactions with B.K.S. Iyengar.

We were also thrilled to have Ann bring a wide selection of books on Iyengar yoga, Yoga Rahasya journals, and past copies of the IYCV newsletters, all offered for free distribution, from the generosity of Shirley Daventry French, who is downsizing her library!

We are so grateful for the commitment of both Brandy Baybutt (who was unable to be present) and Vincent Cummings for providing Moment Yoga to the community of Sooke and offering quality instruction so appreciated by yoga practitioners who follow the teachings and wisdom of B.K.S. Iyengar and his family.

Moment Yoga had its “moment” in the light of this cross-Canada Iyengar Yoga Appreciation weekend – memories and friendships were made and strengthened, all linked by this practice of Iyengar yoga that we so cherish.
